I am going on holiday to Sorrento in the near future. Is it possible to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum on my own or do I need to go on an organised tour? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

You certainly can.

I would recommend using the Circumvesuviana, a local rail network serving the towns on the coast south of Naples. In Sorrento trains leave from the terminus near the centre of town.

There are 5 lines -
Line 1: Napoli-Barra-Torre Del Greco,
Line 2: Napoli-Torre Annunziata-Sorrento,
Line 3: Napoli-Torre Annunziata-Sarno,
Line 4: Napoli-Ottaviano-Sarno and
Line 5: Napoli-Nola-Baiano

and 3 types of trains -
accelerato (stops at every station)
diretto (misses minor stations) and
direttissimo (only on lines 2 and 3)

Anyway, its not as confusing as it looks! Timetables are generally displayed in all stations and trains run every 20 minutes or so.

Pompeii station is Pompei Scavi and the site is a few minutes walk away.

Herculaneum is located in ERCOLANO (on Lines 1-3, I think - best check!). Once you arrive in Ercolano, its a 10 minute walk downhill to the site which is clearly signposted and has a large arched entrance.

Hope this helps.

There is no "snack bar" on the site, even though it is listed on the map. Bring your own lunch and a water bottle. The site was the highlight of our trip to Italy. Do you find this valuable?
