I am going on holiday to Sorrento in the near future. Is it possible to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum on my own or do I need to go on an organised tour?

There is no "snack bar" on the site, even though it is listed on the map. Bring your own lunch and a water bottle. The site was the highlight of our trip to Italy.

Seems like the first 'excavator' was D.Fontana who made underground tunnel under Pompeii to conduct water from river Sarno to Torre Annunziata. Could someone help with images of this Sarno channel in Pompeii and outside?

"The weight of evidence would August for the eruption." August is in some of Pliny's manuscripts of "Letters". Some other manuscripts have another date for the eruption. Some archaeological finds allow to suppose another date, and even analysis of wind strength and directions doesn't support August ..

I go to Pompeii nearly every year & always go to pay my respects to the casts of these bodies. I have never seen anything so sad, especially those of the children. Can you imagine the awful panic & the inevitable deaths of these poor people who only hours before had been going about their ordinary day to day lives.

Homework! Blimey! It's been a while.
Look at the Villa of the Papyri pages. What do they tell you? A civilized society? Cultural? The villa itself - its location and size - what does that tell you about the house and its owner? The papyri - mainly Greek writings - why? What about the structure of Roman society? The household - master and slaves?
Look at the Daily Life pages - what more can you glean from them with regard to work and leisure?
I'm beginning to get a sore head - I remember now why I hated homework. Hope this helps.
Good luck with your assignment.

"Why the destruction? The city has already been destroyed once, what is happening here? " Oh, and one more thing - Pompeii is in the middle of the same process - for private houses, there will be a separate page for each Regio, each relevant Insula and every selected property. This has been completed for Regios I, II, III and V (so there is no page now called Regio I - V, but all the data is still there). This is being done because some of the pages were getting outlandishly large, and to make looking up a specific property easier. Hope this makes sense.

I'd say Pompeii, if only for the reason that the excavations there have uncovered far more than Herculaneum. I was there about thirty years ago and I imagine more has been uncovered since my visit. Visiting Pompeii will give you a much better overview of Roman life in that time. However if time is really short, Herculaneum would, I think be the better bet as it is a more compact area.

I dug this up trawling through the net. As far as I am aware, it is in the Naples Archaeological Museum. I've yet to add it, and one other photograph to the page on the Basilica - it should be available soon.

It looks to me the Archaeologists have been busy digging down deeper here- below those tantalizing windows of the lower level. I wish they'd have a blog or online journal of their progress at this amazing site. Thanks for the update picture.

An online blog would be an excellent idea - I'm not aware of such a thing - perhaps the Herculaneum Conservation Project could be persuaded to provide such a thing, but I don't know if they have the staff.

I noticed your updated posting for Stabiae and wondered if you were aware of the garden excavations at Villa Arianna. The work is very interesting with research being done by Archaeologist Kathryn Gleason to determine plants there based upon the fossil remains of roots.

No, I wasn't aware of the garden excavations - I'll have a look into it. Similar work was done in Pompeii, described in the book The Natural History of Pompeii by Wilhelmina Mary Feemster Jashemski and Frederick Gustav Meyer

Is there an exact location of Pilny's villa at the time of the erruption? From descriptions he had written of the design of his home - it was in Capo Massa (The Villas of Pliny from Antiquity to Posterity) which is around Sorrento. Maybe you can help me with this one.

Although the Archaeologists working at the Villa dei Papyri aren't specifically seeking new papyri, there is always the chance some may turn up scattered around there. The Basilica is also being explored, and (I think) also undergoing some excavation, so there is also the possibility of recovering written documents at that location too. The reporting on these matters is glacially slow, and it is hard to understand why this is so, in this internet age. I'd recommend the Friends of Herculaneum's newsletters as being the most current source for info about the work at Herculaneum, and of course this great site! The SOPRINTENDENZA ARCHEOLOGICA DI POMPEI's website is hopelessly out of date.
