Plan of the Villa (3 of 3)

Plan of the Villa (3 of 3) - AD79

Plan of the Villa

The plan here shows the original first century BC atrium villa at the eastern end of the complex. The walls and structural elements are shown in red with the course of the tunnels dug by the excavators marked in grey/brown. The volcanic flow through the building was from east to west (right to left in the above plan).

Papyri

It was in this area of the villa that the papyri (after which the villa is named) were found. It would appear that the owners were preparing to move the papyri to a safer location during the eruption. The papyri were found in shelves (S), in a cabinet (C), packed in boxes (B) and lying loose (L) on the floor.
