General Description


Insula VIIInsula VII stretches northwards from the Lower Decumanus to the Decumanus Maximus, bounded on the west by the yet to be excavated Cardo II and on the east by Cardo III. Very little of Insula VII has been excavated to date as most of it still lies beneath present day Ercolano.

The Basilica occupies the northeast corner of the partially excavated block, directly across Cardo III from the College of the Augustali. Although the Basilica is still mostly buried, it was extensively explored by tunnel during the Bourbon period while some minor excavations were carried out in the early 1960s. Although the Basilica is not part of the open excavation, for the sake of completeness it is described here along with the one property which has been excavated, the House of Galba.
