General DescriptionLike the other insulae in Herculaneum, Insula VI is divided in two from east to west, then subdivided into individual properties. This block contains several important buildings including the Central Thermae which occupies the southern half of the insula, the House of the Black Hall, the College of the Augustali, the House of the Tuscan Colonnade and the House of the Double Atrium. The information in the above table is based, in part, on data published by Amedeo Maiuri (1958), supplemented by Cerulli Irelli (1974) and Andrew Wallace-Hadrill (1996). Tour of the InsulaTo examine any of the five featured buildings in more detail, select the property from the above list. Each property is located within the insula and has its own individual plan and walk through. The buildings are arranged in order of reference number, which may not necessarily be the route chosen when actually visiting the site. |
