General Description.. The insula contains several interesting buildings which, in the most part, are in a reasonable state of preservation. The most important of the houses in the insula are the House of the Skeleton, the House of the Bronze Herma, the House of Opus Craticium, the House of the Wooden Partition and, occupying a prime location in the lower half of the insula, the House of the Inn. Unfortunately this last house, whilst being the largest and most prestigious, is the least well preserved. Plan of the Insula

The information in the above table is based, in part, on data published by Amedeo Maiuri (1958), supplemented by Cerulli Irelli (1974) and Andrew Wallace-Hadrill (1996). Each property is located within the insula and has its own individual plan and walk through. The buildings are arranged in order of reference number, which may not necessarily be the route chosen when actually visiting the site. |
