General Description


Insula IIIInsula III lies directly across Cardo III from Insula II and is bound by Cardo IV to the east and the Lower Decumanus to the north. At its southern limits, the insula has panoramic views over the Bay of Naples.

The insula contains several interesting buildings which, in the most part, are in a reasonable state of preservation. The most important of the houses in the insula are the House of the Skeleton, the House of the Bronze Herma, the House of Opus Craticium, the House of the Wooden Partition and, occupying a prime location in the lower half of the insula, the House of the Inn. Unfortunately this last house, whilst being the largest and most prestigious, is the least well preserved.

1-2, 18-19 House of the Inn 2450 30+ Atrium (off No.19). 2 peristyles. Bath suite. Most decoration has been lost - bath suite has second style decoration and mosaic flooring, while main peristyle retains some mosaics.
3 House of the Skeleton 410 18 Atrium. 2 nymphaea. Extensive third style decoration, with opus sectile mosaic flooring.
4 Workshop 35 2 Undecorated - probably belongs to No.11.
7 Public latrine 5 1 Undecorated.
10 Shop of the Wooden Press 25 3 Undecorated single shop of a fabric merchant, inside which is the only surviving example of a wooden screw press for ironing clothes. Stairs up to 2 rooms, over the hall of the House of the Wooden Partition.
11 5-6,8-9 House of the Wooden Partition 520 10+ Atrium. Peristyle. Extensive third style decoration. Wooden screen in front of tablinum. Linked to shops/workshops off peristyle.
12 Shop 20 1 Undecorated single room with stairs up.
13-15 House of the Opus Craticium 180 14 Sub-divided into 2 apartments - stairs up at No.13 lead to flat with 4 rooms, one overlooking atrium of No.16. No.14 has 5 rooms with 3 more upstairs. No.15 was a taberna with back room. Little decoration.
16 House of the Bronze Herma 150 4 Atrium. Stairs up front and back. Triclinium to the rear. Third style decoration in atrium and 2 further rooms. Bronze herma next to tablinum.
17 House of the Brick Altar 110 6 Atrium. Rear yard. Ruinous condition with little decoration.
