Furnished Room Description The House of the Carbonised Furniture is, like its near neighbour the Samnite House, one of the oldest buildings in Herculaneum. Renovated in the Claudian era, it is decorated with a mixture of Third and Fourth Style frescoes. A short entrance hall (A) leads directly to the atrium (B) which is without an impluvium. Off the entrance corridor a flight of stairs leads to the upper floor. An oecus (D) to the right of the entrance is decorated with Fourth Style frescoes depicting architectural themes framing pictures of a rooster and a still life (pictured below). .. .. .. At the far side of the atrium is the tablinum and, on its right, a room that overlooks a small garden court (E). The courrtyard also acts as a light source for a room (F) to the rear of the property which is lit by three windows. In this rear reception room are displayed several finds including a dining couch, a wooden table as well as terra-cotta and glass ware. The courtyard contains an impluvium for collecting rainwater and a lararium adorned with stucco reliefs and paintings with a tympanum supported on two side columns. .. ..
