I'm going to be on a cruise that docks in Naples - if I had to choose one site to visit, which would you recommend - Pompeii or Herculaneum?

I'd say Pompeii, if only for the reason that the excavations there have uncovered far more than Herculaneum. I was there about thirty years ago and I imagine more has been uncovered since my visit. Visiting Pompeii will give you a much better overview of Roman life in that time. However if time is really short, Herculaneum would, I think be the better bet as it is a more compact area.

I am going on holiday to Sorrento in the near future. Is it possible to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum on my own or do I need to go on an organised tour?

There is no "snack bar" on the site, even though it is listed on the map. Bring your own lunch and a water bottle. The site was the highlight of our trip to Italy.

"The weight of evidence would August for the eruption." August is in some of Pliny's manuscripts of "Letters". Some other manuscripts have another date for the eruption. Some archaeological finds allow to suppose another date, and even analysis of wind strength and directions doesn't support August ..

"The coverage of Herculaneum is pretty good - some more photos of the Theatre, Basilica and the Villa of the Papyri would be nice." I agree - but they're hard to come by - meantime, the Herculaneum Conservation Project website covers the Theatre (see links). We'll keep looking though.

Hi, great site by the way. What happened to the introductory videos you had earlier. They gave a fuller story of what happened - can I view them somewhere else?

Sorry, but the video, like all the rest come from 'youtube'. These clips have since been deleted, so we can't show them here anymore. We'll try to vary the intros from time to time with more interesting stuff.
