AD79 - Year of Destruction
| Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabiae, Oplontis and Boscoreale were lost to the world in late August AD79 to lie hidden for almost 1800 years, a time capsule of Roman life in the first century AD. This website provides details on:
LocationThe excavations at Pompeii are located just to the west of present day Pompei, while Herculaneum is situated in the modern town of Ercolano. These sites have excellent connections both by rail and road with Naples, Sorrento and other nearby towns. The Roman sites at Stabiae, Oplontis and Boscoreale can be located by use of the map below and are also within easy reach. As the map shows, Vesuvius looms large over all these towns.,, |

Screen Resolution..This site has been optimised to be viewed with Firefox at a resolution of 1024 x 768. Other resolutions have been tested and should be fine, although the pictures will be distorted if the horizontal to vertical ratio varies from the optimum. If the layout looks 'odd', please let us know and we'll check it out. Versions of Internet Explorer have issues with some of Wetpaint's features, such as Slide Show and Video. If you are unable to see the slide shows, please bear with us - its not our fault! (Better still, get Firefox). The site occasionally has an optional link to an external 3D image. If you wish to view it, you will require to have Quicktime loaded on your computer. Other VersionsThis site is available in Google Italian, French and German. The translations may not be that great, but if they prove popular, we may devote more resources to improve their quality and/or extend the number of languages covered. Latest News

I'm going to be on a cruise that docks in Naples - if I had to choose one site to visit, which would you recommend - Pompeii or Herculaneum?

I am going on holiday to Sorrento in the near future. Is it possible to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum on my own or do I need to go on an organised tour?

Hi, great site by the way. What happened to the introductory videos you had earlier. They gave a fuller story of what happened - can I view them somewhere else?
